I’m thinking about going to the Mecum auto auction here in about a month. They’ve got a really interesting mix of vehicles and it’s really close to me this year, in the Phoenix Cardinals stadium.

They’ve even got Yamaha XS2 in the line up. I saw that bike for sale in the recent Las Vegas , Mecum auction, it obviously didn’t sell.

I'd be tempted to get an old Ford tractor. Because I don't have enough projects ;)

What are the prices like? Auctions items used to go for wholesale. but I'm looking for them to surpass retail.

Yeah I have been to a few Barrett Jackson auctions and for the most part , sale prices are rediculous. And it’s still very much buyer beware. I remember reading and article once about a guy attending the big vintage bike auction in Vegas, he had his sights on a clean survivor BMW R90S, that was supposed to be turn key, ready to ride. He stood tall and paid a high price only to get a bike that needed a lot of work in the end.

Reviving an old thread....

Here’s a beauty Jim, right around the corner from me but, crazy money (for me anyway). Only a 500cc though. I’ve also wanted one too but talked myself out of it because of initial cost and with limited production, parts availability scared me.

Yeah, that's a beauty alright. If they want 12k for that 500, I wonder what this 650 will bring.... double that?
He’s had it for sale most of last year. At that price it will be a tough sell. Keep in mind it’s Cdn $. Still expensive though. Bikes like this need to be exposed to the US market to sell. 10X the population south of the border and the exchange rate helps dramatically.

I thought this was a good deal.

CX650 Turbo 🤩
What a beautiful bike ! Rode with a CX500 Turbo several times and rode it too. I know that CX650 Turbo was better bike ! One that we missed on the chance..

I just registered at Mecum to see the auction results. For people bidding on line there isn’t very much info about the history or condition of the bikes so I suppose it’s rather risky? Looks like some nice deals. I continue to be surprised to see how much these Honda Monkey’s and Mini Trail bikes are fetching.

I know every bike and every deal is different and I think most people at auctions are honorable, but I recall reading an article by a moto journalist regarding his experience with buying a bike at the BIG Mecham auction that they hold in Las Vegas ( usually in January ). He was buying a BMW R90S, and like you said there wasn’t a whole lot of info on the bike, but it looked really clean and he thought he was going to be buying a ready to ride bike. He won the bid and shipped the bike home and while it looked really nice , he was disappointed to find that it needed a lot of work to get it running right.

Is that $ 1100 for the BSA ?
If such prices no sense in rebuild ... If no major defect that was Cheap
at least a factor 3
Cool Bikes

I have a Mecum Las Vegas perspective from actually attending in person 9 years ago but still.
Realize this is a large Casino in LasVegas (South Point?) and the Wing accommodating the auction was quite near a gambling casino room. Full on gambling, pretty ladies promoting drinking of course. Food, Everything.
Many very beautiful motorcycles to walk amongst with motorcycle enthusiasts everywhere to talk with too.
It’s fun !
Some buyers are very knowledgeable and very serious.
Some are having a great weekend with friends ready spend cashola !
As a few 60’s era British bikes went across the stage, One particular 63 Bonneville silver & white really caught my eye.
As bikes are bid on and sold, they are rolled to a line where they are parked for shipping. But still available for the public to see. So I walked down and around to that Bonneville and found it and the new owner. I told him how nice it looked and his reply to me was “would you like to buy it?” Kinda confused I asked why ? And he and his buddy there laughingly told me that he was actually trying to bid on the previous British bike and got lost in the affair and accidentally purchased the wrong motorcycle to the tune of about $20k ! They were partying, and weren’t even too concerned about the mistake. DEEP POCKETS in Las Vegas on a weekend for fun.
I actually walked about 3 miles to get there 2 days just to not pay the taxi price and get the walk in.
It was really fun all in all except for the Spirit Airlines ride home being very late and catching the flu on the plane 👎
All kinds of motorcycle buyers attend the auction , and just lookers too.
