Dug out some old 71&72 frame cut parts I’d done and some other smalls that I couldn’t pitch from long ago.Way long ago.lol.Lottsa typical old leaking forgotten shed rust.Using the old “dip in muriatic acid” and inspection process before any further preservation.NEVER ADD WATER TO ACID.Wear all the safety gear.Follow all label instructions.

I keep a 5 gal bucket of Muriatic acid out back. Covered of course, so the dogs don't sniff it. Does wonders on rust.
Fwiw, anything less than a 28% solution is iffy. Yeah, I did some experimenting a ways back. :er:

In no way trying to outdo or excell, just adding what has worked for me.

I watched em slosh a bit of muriatic in the old Hummer tank so I could ride it. (8 years old).I didn’t neutralize the tank on motorcycle # 2,1970 SL 100,but I saved the tank and the motorcycle.

Good morning Magoo66. I was contemplating doing the inside of my gas tank rather than the vinegar treatment. Do you have any pointers?

It’s fast working and will get it clean. Its a must to rinse and neautralize!Be very careful! All Home centers and most hardware stores sell it.My biggest pointer is follow label instructions!Be safe.

I use muriatic acid... which is actually hydrochloric acid and follow up with Ospho... which contains phosphoric acid.
Derusting takes an hour, give or take with no flash rust after.

For sure, my method does not take an hour. Much longer. Something for me to keep in mind. Are you still working on that 5 gal bucket? :)

Yep. I've got a mix that I've had for a few years. Used it to clean an xs750 knee dent that was full of rust.
Not sure of the ratio that I used but I've put to mind "always Acid to Water, never Water to Acid, and the mental picture is A&W Root Beer, never WAaa! The solution worked a charm like 'Right Now!'.
White vinegar is grand but slow.
I've got a nasty rusty '78 dual petcock Special tank that will get the treatment one of these days.

I used Evap-o-Rust on the last tank I painted. I've had it for a few years and never tried it so.... It worked, but took like 4 or 5 days. I'll just go back to my acids from now on. One hour and done.

I use a product called acid magic.

Cleans rust really well and had almost no fumes/vapor.

Used to use old muriatic to clean rust in tubs - in a confined space vapors alone would strip chrome off all bathroom hardware if not covered.

I had my hand at some de-rusting today as well. I used this product in the past to bring my 77 back to grace after it was pulled from a 35 year slumber in a barn.

The active ingredient is Phosphoric acid. I like that this is a gel form as it sticks to what you spray it on. Todays project was an old HD swingarm I bought at a swap meet this summer. It had previosly been stripped but never painted or coated. There was no serious rust, so I just sprayed on, blotted it around with a toothbrush to ensure coverage and waited about 20 minutes. Then scrubbed lightly with a wire brush and rinsed off. I did a half/half application to test the results. Then a second round to finish the other half as well as some minor touch ups in a few spots.

The product is also a rust inhibitor and is good to paint over within an hour after drying. I am not ready to paint yet as there may still be some mods to it as well as installing new bearings and races, so I just hit it with a light coat of Gibbs as an extra layer of protection against any flash. Very happy with the results.

You dont have to neutralize it with water prior to paint? (Yes, I realize thats an open invitation to flash rust, thus the question, lol)
