First off, for these CV type carbs, you'll want to use UNI straight foam pods, not the K&N pleated type. The UNI you want for the BS38's is the UP4200. It is 4" long and is the longest you can fit in front of the battery box. It has a 2" diameter inlet and that fits the BS38's like a glove .....

And don't bother getting the special filter oil they make for foam filters. It's too thick and may clog these pods. Just use a 50-50 mix of gas and motor oil .....

5T do you “paint” on the gas/oil mixture or submerge it an squeeze out the excess. I agree the UNI oil is not the best option it’s super messy and sticky.

I just "paint" it on then let them sit 10 or 15 minutes to let the excess drain off. You still may get a few drips after mounting them but that stops in a short time.

It seems to me that the stock air box provides some degree of support for the carb. Is this is really not an issue ? For what it's worth, I like to dust a filter with PJ-1 aerosol filter oil.

It's never been an issue for me yet and I've run pods for 15+ years. Just make sure you have the tin shrouds on the intake manifolds, they add more support.
