Hey guys,

I'm in the process of tracing an oil leak on my 72 650, and I'm down to the cam chain adjuster area. If the o-ring on the big acorn nut isn't the culprit I'll need to check the main gasket between the adjuster assembly and the head. Can I do that with the motor complete, running and in the bike? Looking at the different adjuster assemblies it doesn't look to me like anything would fall inside, but wanted to check with you all just to be sure.

Cheers,
Cody

Sure. If it's the original roller style, put the engine at TDC, back-out the adjuster screw to unstress the roller arm, undo the 6 bolts, slowly withdraw (mount base might need to be tipped forward a little while withdrawing). Of course, carbs will be in the way...

Pulling the carbs will give you more room to work, but yes it can be done.
I would remove the adjuster screw completely before removing the housing.

That's what I needed to know. Cheers!
