If I change out the OEM Mufflers on my 83 Maxim to shorties or slashes, do I also have to do anything with the carbs to keep her running strong?

Always. Epa chocked out all carbs after 79. Is that a dual carbed v?
The maxim is an inline 4?

Yup. Inline 4. Might not....might have to. With stock air box in place might need a bit of jump on pilot and Main jet.

Yeah, inline.. I was thinking she might get lean if I didn't bump the main jets... but I don't want to have to do a lot of reworking on the carbs.

Boiler plate: Avoid pod filters if you want it to run well.

Yup. My kz650 ran so good after I put the stock air box back on. Last owner sold it cheap because it was running bad. 4 carbs is an annoyance. Especially 4 vm type carbs. But once synced they lasted along time. I seriously think that kz650 was one of my fave rides. What a rocket. Kinda makes you wonder what took yamaha so long to get in the game.
