Starting a new Career

I was offered a position as a welder, which if anyone knows, I dont know how to do.

They gave me an offer higher than the wage I requested, working 4 10 hour days, and couldnt find it in me to say no! I start monday.

oh, and did I mention the awesome benefits package, and vacation time? finally my work has paid off, and I got myself a big boy job.

I graduated from Tech school as a certified motorcycle technician, and moved to a bank because I couldnt afford my student loans on a mechanics salary...

Now that ive caught up with myself a little bit, and learned financial skills from the banking career, I am happy to move back to a job that challenges my mind, and keeps my hands moving.

Let the adventures begin!!!

You’re gonna be a welder, but you don’t know how to weld? Are they going to teach you?
I spent 10 years as a welder when I was in my twenties. I supported a young family doing it. Best of luck to you.

Mailman, they are gonna teach me! I was sure to mention that the only welding experience I had was making "Goose Turds" on my old cars exhaust. he liked that evidently

Machine, boy do I hope so. Ill be welding, and fabricating custom aluminum truck beds, goose neck trailers, box trucks, etc.

I like the saying "if you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball"

I guess the same thing may be true that "if I can weld a truck, I can weld a bike!"

You are a welder! You just didn't tell them you were a good welder! "Goose turds" that stay together are welds. OTJ training? "Bennies"? Vacation? And a good paycheck? Winner, winner, chicken dinner! forget about you guys? Hell, you guys are the only kind of guidance with motorcycles I have, Im not closely involved in my local motorcycle community at the moment, because all the people around me wanna buy new, and ride fast, Im too old school for that.

You troglodytes will always be the first to hear of my new life adventures, and updates on my bikes. and yes, I said BIKES plural. with this new job will come new toys.

the 4 10's are going to be in a row, so thats the best part. it was an offer I couldnt refuse. I cannot wait. so far this has been the longest week of my life, and its only monday. Ill be sure to let you guys know how my first day goes. I start next monday.

Pay attention to your air supply. The best welding helmets available are just good enough.
I was an industrial welder for a year just out of high school. That taught me a couple of things.

I loved doin' 4-10's you could work 5 days, get 10 hrs overtime and still have a weekend off.
My Son has been a welder almost all his life. I taught him when he was about 10 yrs old. In 6 months he was better than me... which ain't sayin' much really. Now at 40, he's an Iron Worker working on skyscrapers... pullin' in about a hundred and a half a year. If you stick with it, the sky's the limit... literally.

Like my actual breathing quality? It's a BIG open space warehouse, but I definitely don't wanna inhale all the smoke from it. I'll be investing in a nice welding hood for sure if not given a decent one.

I know little. Yeah in the old daze we just "sucked it up" both figuratively and literally.
Many shops are now using hoods with filtered air. For a career I would be wanting to do this.
Miller and speedglas both have them.

I absolutely agree with Gary on this point Greg.

You only get one set of eyes, lungs, heart etc. and what seems like "no biggie" as a virile invincible young 20-something, can be pretty damned serious when you are 50 years old sitting in front of a doctor who is giving you bad news to take home to your wife and children.

A friend just retired... welder....got into a good shop.. after a few years at different locations... and he did vey well.. paid off his house early... retired.. his wife, new Buick.. and him, new Frontier pick up. He has a mig-tig setup in his garage…. he can weld paper…. has saved my kister many times..

Well if they are using them great. if not ask around a bit, talk to other workers see what the deal is. Not cheap stuff, someone may not want it to become "needed". Just use new guys caution till you know the lay of the land. Hope this works out great for you!

Yup - agreed Gary. Best to see what the culture is there and "keep up with the Jones" - just be safe.
