What tools shouls I acquire for checking the tolerances of my motor? A set of calipers and micrometers? What do you guys reccommend?

feeler gauges, micrometer, digital voltmeter, test light, manual, good connection to the internets- this forum.

Feeler gauges, 1" micrometer, dial bore gauge of the size to fit the cylinders, outside micrometer of the size to fit the pistons, dial indicator to read valve guide wear.

Snap gauges and vernier calipers could be used for a rough reading, but not as accurate as the above tools.

All your readings have to be compared to the specs in the Yamaha Service Manual.

These tools will cost quite a lot. It would not be cost effective to buy these tools for just a one time engine re-build. Better to take your cylinders/pistons and heads to an engine re-building shop. They have the proper measuring tools and will tell you if you need to go oversize or stay stock size.
