Why is there a cover on the front drum? the little one that covers what would be a cooling intake for the brakes. Without the cover it looks pretty good, although the small four screw holes are there. Just wondering. Was it intended to be taken off when racing? Might look even better if instead of the cover, a mesh was used to keep debris out.

Yep, that's a 'racing' thing. Leave 'em on for normal street, keeps the junk out. Uncork both sides at the track, avoid heat brake fade. I agree, looks better to me.

I uncorked the brakes on my older XS1B when I cafe'd it, gave the parts to our salvage shop. Been that way ever since. Never had problems, even in the rain.

Left the front corked on the daily stocker. I don't ride whacky anymore...

I like the ability to run with it on or off, even flip it to duct the air in. Thankfully my six vent plugs are still pliable, so removing two, three, four, or all the plugs can vary flow rate also.

Drum brakes for racing?? Lets be serious here. For any real racing, you would have to replace those drums with disc brakes.

Yes, for Vintage (make believe) racing, drums look appropriate for that time.
