I've just taken delivery of a TLS front drum from a German market model SR500.
I've never actually looked at one "in the metal" before.
Obviously I knew that the drum casting itself was completely different with five dummy vent holes replacing the six genuine vent holes of the XS1.
I wasn't too sure about the brake plate, but comparing them side by side, that's a completely different casting too.
Even the brake cam operating arms are subtly different.
I'm just wondering if anything at all is the same as the old XS1 design.
The pushrod between the arms looks the same, I haven't had chance to have a good look at the shoes yet.
I've no idea why Yamaha felt the need to make everything different yet the same as it were.
I'm definitely of the "if it ain't busted don't fix it " persuasion.
Maybe back in the 70's when hydraulic discs were king, someone in Japan decided to scrap the original casting dies ?
Drum is (hopefully) heading for a 650 Special with the rear wheel from a '79 Special II.
I've got the anchor bracket for the brake plate.
Just need to sort out the axle spacers
