My first ever bike build!!

Good for you Airwolfie! Nice work so for man. Oh, that's what it looks like! My detent spring was missing and I didn't have a clue what it looked like, how long is that? Looks to be about 1.5 or 1.25 inches. Do I get the prize?:D

Coupla tips:

Can't tell you anything about pressure relief valve spring or relief pressure, but you could use this example as a template: Assume the ball/seat diameter at about 1/4", that's about 1/20 sq in area, so if you push a probe thru the relief hole against the ball, and the ball displaces at one pound of force, then the ball/valve will bleed at 20 psi. Adjust as you see fit.

Thinly applied grease on the bottom sump gasket (as you've done) will ease future disassembly. Same trick works for the difficult-to-remove side cover filter cover.

I've always oiled (a few drops) the innards of oil pumps, to prime them. If assembled dry, could delay delivery of oil during first start-up. If top end is well pre-oiled or uses assembly lube, this is probably not an issue.

Thamks John! I couldn't find a source for it online so I decided to use my wire-bending skills and Orthodontic pliers and bend it back into shape. Sill feels quite stiff so I hope it will work! And YES! you are right! It is 1.25 inches long! Noddy badge coming your way!!:D

Thanks twomany, I'm assuming you mean the valve spring relief in the screw element that goes through the filter? I haven't touched that, hoping the PO didn't either and it's still in its stock setting!
The oil trick I think came from one of your posts, and as I'm one for easy working, gladly used this trick! I will definately use it on the side cover as well now that you said it!

Yes, the oil pressure relief valve in that bolt. Peanut raised the question, and I seem to recall Punkscaler had some posts on that in a thread discussing oil pressures, filters, and his pressure guage.

You're doing well on this rebuild.

I love work, I'm fascinated by it. I can stand and watch it for hours....

thats what I like to see......recycling !:thumbsup::laugh:

Just removed my detent spring and measured it and it 29.8mm and very stiff so probably 30mm as new :wink2:
I reckon you'll have to look out for a new one some time.

A pic to show what I mean

Thanks Peanut! My spring is quite stiff( I was going to say" mine is very stiff", but dirty minds on this forum will take that the wrong way!!:D) AND measures 30mm!! So thanks to your measurements, mine will probably be OK!

Going to the shed in a bit to see how it fares!

HAHAHA! that made me LAUGH!!!

No mate, I cleaned most of my parts way before I started the engine rebuild, and I was also wearing gloves earlier because my hands don't like being washed too often, they go very dry. Besides, a new build deserves clean-ish parts, right?!

I hear the smack of blue Nitrile gloves lol:laugh::D:D

I ordered some gloves for this build and waited 3x weeks to find the ebay seller had gone out of business by which time I had virtually finished lol.

Haha yeah! They do NOT like WD40 though! so I went to Tesco's and got me some heavy duty marigolds, they are black so a lot more manly than the yellow ones!!:D They do the job nicely, I haven't tried WD40 on them yet!

So this afternoon I installed the neutral indent plug thingymajob, and it WORKS!! I CAN FIND NEUTRAL!!! So pleased! At first I couldn't, and I thought I had to undo all of my efforts, but after tinkering a bit, I managed to get it to work!

Anyway, the reason I didn't show you the oil filter cover, is because I was doing something different to it.........................

That's the Japanese symbol for Dragon. The Dragon, in both Japanese and Chinese culture, brings strength, luck and fortune, but should be respected because it would also be able to do fate the other way around! Pretty much sums up these bikes I think!!!

I would definately go with gas. A friend of mine has a gasless welder, and it spits terribly, not worth the money!

yes gas is definitely the way to go especially if you plan on welding in the open.

I am so tempted to buy one myself as I have a Transit campervan to keep sound.

Then I am also considering buying a compressor and paint spray equipment .....and a media blaster as well

Not sure if I'll get enough use to warrant the expense really:shrug:

Hehe yeah but a man HAS to have machines!!!:D

it would mean we would have to expand the shed ..........:D:thumbsup:
