Mailmans , 77D getting a makeover

You know what would look killer on the side of that black and gold tank? These.....

Take a look at Lakeview's red tanked ‘76. He has a neat looking Yamaha logo on each side and it does look very smart IMO.

I have always felt that the word Yamaha on the engine cases is....enough and that the tuning fork logo looks good.

And, fwiw, I rode the second day of the Ozark Rally and back here since then just opening one petcock. No fuel starvation at speed. Probably heretical, but why not just blank off one petcock and run one only? Cut potential leaks in half and more space for gas line and filter routing.

Ha! That’s an interesting idea, and I do believe you could probably do just fine with one, but I’ll probably go ahead and set it up the way it’s always been.

On the matter of Yamaha tuning fork logos, those folks who live in bigger cities may find a musical instrument repair shop and they may have the logos as well.

The company uses that logo on the cases of their musical instruments and they may have repair parts in-stock.

Huh! I never thought about a local dealer.
All the ones I see on Craigslist come from Taiwan or England
I would encourage everybody to buy from their local dealers. The local support is needed. All the online buying is hurting our local shops.
Saturday I drove to one of the local Yamaha dealerships in Portland to look over a SR500 which has been on display for decades.
That dealership is closed now. I drove right past it not recognizing the new look.

The earlier tanks weren't designed to run just one petcock. Once the fuel level drops below the hump down the middle, you won't fully drain the side without the petcock. The later one petcock tanks were redesigned inside. That hump was lowered at the rear so fuel from the side without a petcock could run around it. The redesign allows one petcock to drain the whole tank.

Thanks for explaining the rationale of the 2 taps, 5Twins.
But I would guess that unless one is riding 100 miles at a go, operating from the left tap only probably would make no noticeable difference.

Just need to spend more time in the twisties to slosh the fuel over to the side with the petcock.

Not sure why Yamaha didn't do the tanks on the XS like the ones on the RD's I had, small hose jumping from one side to the other.

If doing a repaint of a tank it would not be that hard to just braze in a couple nipples for say 3/16 tubing at the bottom of each side.

Think I read somewhere that the music logo & motor logo are slightly different. IIRC one the tips of the tuning forks are inside of the circle and the other the tips touch the circle. Can't remember which is which offhand.
