Hi breakneck and welcome,
OK, first the silly stuff. Is dad's Buick or perhaps a 2x4 in the way?
Will it act the same with the engine stopped?
With the tranny in neutral?
Will it roll or drive forward OK?
Did you try putting the bike on it's centerstand and rolling the rear wheel backwards?
Details! The Devil is in the details!

no 2 x 4 , dad has passed on . does it with motor running not in neutral when in gear and clutch lever pulled rolls forward like a bat at of hell fast bike. no center stand .

Only thing I can think of would be the kickstart gear sliding over and trying to engage.
The test for this would be to push the kickstart lever down a few inches, then let it come back up a couple of inches, hold it there (an inch or two from fully returned), back up the bike, then see if the kickstart tries to rise just as the bike locks up...

My 83 does the exact same thing. My solution is to not worry about it and consider it a hill holder feature.
