Frame and motor say 2FO 20....
Seems like it is 78/79 according to the info. However, it has grommet side panels! Gold 19/16 mags. I'm confused.

Hi Jon,
like you say, Skull's excellent chart sez it's an XS-F.
My Clymer's book has the same wiring diagram for a late XS650E & all XS650SE, 2F & SF.
Scroll down Skull's linked page to see a 1979 Special II.
I think that's what you have.
Someone may have swapped in the artillery wheels later.
(not everyone likes to clean wire wheels or run on tubed tires)
And although a gold finish front wheel may have come from an XS750/850/11 Midnight Special those bikes are shafties so the rear won't be.
Like Skull sez, most likely someone painted them.

fredintoon, XS650F is 2F0-02**** . XS650SG is 2F0-20****. 80SG with mags and disk brake front and rear. Grommet side-covers are a tell, all 78E, SE/79F, SF, Special II and 80G Special II had metal side-covers and they sat on hooks and latched

yeah, the 3G1code on the chart had both the OP and me fooled.
Note to self:-
The model code is not necessarily the same as engine & frame number prefix.
