Got it Back

Looks like you've got some good bones to work with! In my humble opinion, I think step one is to focus on whether the engine will run or not. We can help with that. The process is called a "wake up".

Cleaning or repairing ALL electrical couplings, bullet connectors, Switches and Grounds/Earth is just as important as anything else to make the bike run properly. Any resistance is going to affect the running of other components and this can lead to misdiagnosis, and thinking it is caused by something else.

Although the charging system is important, it does not have to be up to scratch when your in the process of getting it started and cleaning it up. a new battery with a good charger is important.
Use the Tech Menu and the ID thread. http://www.xs650.com/threads/xs650-...workshop-manuals-and-other-information.30569/ In this thread I have linked to a lot of threads for basic upgrades and for the purpose of getting started on a new project such as yours."

If you like details this book is pretty awesome, it covers engine and electric. I got it as I love to study a book (I’m old), but also e quick reference if in doubt and you don’t want to spend hours on the internet looking for the right explanation. That being said all can be found, either here by looking or asking or on the net.

Thank you very, very much. Your generosity has saved me some money and a week waiting for the manual to be delivered. I will use my laptop while I am working on the bike. So far, I have air cleaners, spark plugs, front brake pads and both tires ordered. I am pretty sure I will need both handlebar controls, ignition switch and both mirrors. The battery for my 1978 Honda CX500 fits and it's on the charger now. The big plan includes removing all the chrome and taking it to a shop in Tijuana. In CA, Chromium hexaflorine has been outlawed, but they do excellent work in Mexico.

Thank you very, very much. Your generosity has saved me money and a week of waiting for the manual to be delivered. Brake pads, air filters, spark plugs and both tires are on order. Goal is to get it running and reliable, then tackle the appearance items. I have this uneasy feeling that the side covers might be impossible. My originals had a big gold 650 and a V-shaped emblem.

Heat Wave.. Linda Ronstadt. “I can’t explain it, don’t understand it” I posted 2 replies saying thanks for the pdf manuals. I will need them daily during this restoration, but I haven’t seen them in the thread. So for the third time, thank you. My rear tire has been delivered. On order are, front brake pads, spark plugs, air filters, front tire and a genuine right side fairing cover with the 650 V emblem. Also spotted a headlight bucket on eBay, but haven’t ordered it yet. Also looking at aftermarket turn signals. $275 for 4 OEM a little out of my price range.

When the front tire gets here I will be ready to put the front end back together. Pulling the front wheel off, restoring the rotor and all the rust, reworking the master break cylinder. Once I get to the handlebars, everything comes off. New starter switch and engine kill switch, hi lo light switch, turn signals and horn. Rock and Roll.

Ebay. These are the ones I'm using on my '80. Fit and feel is just like OEM. 30 bucks a pair and free shipping.

Sometimes, the link acts a bit flaky - there's times I try to like or reply to a thread and nowt happens. Or seems to happen, sometimes the reply appears after a few minutes. Can lead to duplicates which makes one feel a bit foolish.

Said above about the link sometimes acts a bit flaky? Well, I'll swear the editor the forum uses is a bit erratic, nothing to do with getting confussed or getting fingers crossed up or doing a cut'n'paste in the wrong place, nothing to do with ahem user error, but I'll swear sometimes the flaming software swaps the words round or auto incorrects a spelling here and there. Either to humorous or embarrassing effect . . .
