New-B ... Sump Filter change

I would appreciate some guidance on the mesh size.

Since this strainer is on the suction side of the pump I would be leery of going any finer than what the factory used. I would hope the Yamaha engineers factored in the pumps flow characteristics in specing the mesh size. I would not be a good thing to cause pseudo-cavitation in the pump. If fixing a tear in it one needs to be careful not to cover any more than necessary.

Decided to do a comparison of the screen mesh used on the older stock XS sump filters versus the aftermarket offerings.

Stock sump filter screen:
Screen wire size = 0.004", on a 0.010" grid matrix
This gives a passthru mesh size of 0.006" (150 Microns)

Aftermarket sump filter screen:
Screen wire size = 0.006", on a 0.020" grid matrix (much coarser)
This gives a passthru mesh size of 0.014" (350 Microns)

What does mesh size mean?
Mesh size is referring to the mesh number (a US measurement standard) and its relationship to the size of the openings in the mesh and thus the size of particles that can pass through these openings. Figuring out the mesh number is simple. All you do is count the number of openings in one linear inch of screen. This count is the mesh number.

Looks like the stock 150 micron screen would be about a 100 mesh, and the coarser 350 micron aftermarket screen would be about a 50 mesh...
