I have a 79 XS that needs intake boots/manifolds. I am not going to run an airbox. Am I better off with replacement stock type rubber boots or a welded steel tube type. I am also curious why a certian one is better. I am using stock carbs.

Thank you in advance.

most aluminum/steel types are longer than stock for performance reasons - you might have issues running filters and the battery box getting in the way.

JBM industries makes a great manifold that doesn't require the metal collars like the stock manifolds. 650central.com also sells a good set of stock-type manifolds.

avoid the mikesxs ones - heard they don't last very long like many of their rubber bits

I should have been more clear, I am not going to have a stock location battery box. I am going to hardtail the frame. Are the slightly longer metal intakes any harder to tune? They look cool and are usually only a few dollars more than the OE type boots.

I'm not sure the metal ones work with stock carbs. I think they're more for the aftermarket VM carbs.
