one of the things that confused me was the Start/Decompression switch and the kill switch being in the same bar switch and running the 3 wires......I had nothing to go on except this pic and the brown threw me when looking at the diagram and the safety relay has 2 brown wires

Brown comes from ignition switch to kill switch. Red/white goes from kill switch to power ignition coils, there it also changes to brown and then goes to safety relay. Blue white comes from the ground side of starter solenoid coil to switch on decompressor lever where contacts put it to ground when lever is pulled.

What really throws things when doing continuity testing on these diagrams is the 2 main ones used had a R/W coming from the ignition switch......Doesn't show 2 Bl and 2 Br after the i ignition switch connector, or a separate R/W and Br wire joining at the coil.......Don't know how anyone without a good knowledge of electrics could work them out.

I would like to thank all you guys. All the pics sent to me by all, (RobinC, Robin (RIP), passed during our to and fro while he was sending me pics), helped me get things into some semblance and with the help pointing out issues i could get a useful diagram drawn up. We have achieved

Someone previously said the starter solenoid shouldn't have the ground there. I agree. Hot from the batt, hot to the starter... both red. Brown from the safety relay and bl/wh to the start switch.... no ground.

Looks damn good Doug!!!

Jim,
Yea added earth to decompression/starter switch forgot to remove the earth from Solenoid...........done and done and cleaned up and re-posted

Bob,
Thanks but lots of help, and nothing compared to your XS2.......Photoshop program has run out of ink ...........

..............made the wire, (as drawn bigger/wider and noted it as a cable), from battery to Solenoid and from solenoid to starter motor a black, (B), cable with a red running inside as a hot power cable..........Just in case a novice thinks it is an Earth wire.....Also marked the battery + and - showing the cable is off the Positive/hot side........Is that what your referring to??

Hard to please as different people see things different.......was previously mentioned the solenoid to battery should be a black wire.........It is a black cable on the bike so i compromised on the drawing

On all later diagrams it is drawn as a red wire in a heavier gauge

Ruh-roh.

Quick check of the early wiring diagrams show incorrect headlight filament connections. The common tie of the two filaments goes to ground.

Did 72 get the fork/bucket ground wire? The real early bikes depended on grounding through the headstock bearings!

I just wanted to add some photos here that might be helpful. Detail shots of the tear down of my original left handlebar switch. Shows mechanical detail of the switch gear.

Green, Yellow, Blue, Red / Yellow

Wire colors coming from the turn signals and horn button side of switch,
Brown, Brown / White, Green, Pink

Aftermarket right handlebar kill switch, has factory color wires. Kill switch has red/white and brown wires, the black ground wire is just a jumper that goes to the starter lever, the starter lever has a blue / white wire running to it.

Bumping this up so I can find it. Looking at 2 brown wires off my safety switch, but have not got to the starter/decompressor switch install for the 73 TX.
It'll be fine.
