I'm no mechanic or engineer so please confirm these codes for yourself before spending your good money on my errors. For the cam seals, opinions vary. Seems the important thing here is thicker the better versus clearance from the plate in front.

The codes are made up of...
Type ~ Shaft hole width ~ Outside width ~ Thickness

Don't know what the occasional extra letters and numbers mean.
Surprise surprise, manufacturers use their own codes for Type. This ARS web page has a graphic to help a little...

Nice list, Smeggy.
Thanx for the ARS pdf showing the lip profiles!
Here's some discussions on the troublesome camshaft end seals:

http://www.xs650.com/threads/need-new-cam-shaft-seal-oring-gasket.36404/

The takeaway seems to be that 5mm thick seals were used on the early bikes, then upgraded to 6mm thick, with some 6mm versions not working well, and 7mm is too thick to stay on the cam end...

Another good point made about the cam seals when I posted this list on Facebook... the ATU pin! The pic I don't know how to attach shows the state of my old 6mm thick seal. I thought this was damage caused by me being an arse. Turns out a 5mm seal would have avoided the serious chaffing damage from the pin.
