I purchased a master cylinder from Hugh's Handbuilt last year and connected the rear brake light by soldering the wires. It worked great for about a year, and then I guess shorted out. I tried to order a replacement part for it but that wasn't possible but Hugh's Handbuilt actually sent me a new one for free. Those guys are great, and it's a great looking master cylinder. Anyway my question is there a proper way to connect the rear brake wires or is soldering the right way to do it?

There are better crimp on connectors, but if you use the common connectors found in the stores I do it this way. Cut the plastic insulator off of the connector, crimp the connector onto the wire and solder, cover the connector and wire with shrink tube, sometimes using two sizes of shrink tube overlapped.
