New to the xs650. I picked up an 1980 xs650 and wanna get it running before i tear down and rebuild. Why? I wanna ride it to see if it jumps outa gear or gives me any reason i shhould check the bootm end. So i clean the bike pretty well yesterday and noticed two things dealing with the carbs and intakes first on the intake the have inlets on each intake the one on the right is capped the one on the left has a small lenght of hose and a screw in it I'm assuming it needs the cap also and this is the way they rigged it to work. These inlets are to connect a sync tool? I am I correct in that?
I also noticed on the petcock(love that word) It has a connection for the main hose but there is one on the back of it also. What connects to that and where does it go? I', use to having onlty a single connection one my petcocks. Even my Yamaha RD350 if I remeber correctly had only one connection.
And finally the choke pull it doesn't hold out is it more of a pump? these of course are the bs34's being that they are on a 1980

The second connection on the petcock is a vacuum connection to operate the petcock. It is opened by the inlet vacuum and automatically closes after shutting down the engine. This has to be connected to one of the "inlets" you mentioned.

Hein

Awesoome probably goes to the one they had they sbolt in. Thanks so much for the info. What about the choke if pull it out and let go it just slides bak in I didnt notice a way to move it and hold it open.

There is a set screw on the choke shaft that could have fallen out.
Also, why are you rebuilding the engine? are the bearings bad? these engines are usually good to go as long as they werent under water. I would just change the oil and both filters, tune it up and run it.

Appears to need new rings as a compression test told me gonna do big bore kit 750. I have time I got my retro styled streetfighter running so wanna build something fun and fast

The choke rod bearing/ball and spring is probably missing. If you look at the left carb at the front there is a hole in the molding that holds the rod. The ball and spring should be on the backside of the rod in the recessed pocket.
Your connection of the vacuum line to petcock is correct.

Got the 650 I purchased running yesterday after i recieved the battery. Had to run a fuel line fron my dirtbike to the 650 the tank has minor rust in it. On the broke side so the build will take a while but I will be around to ask questions. Thanks for the answers. Here is a picture after washing the cobwebs off the bike when I purchased it and a couple of my daily rider. Can you guess what it is?
