I've got a quick chain tensioner question. Bike is hard tailed, and has a fixed (IE: w/o a spring) chain tensioner installed. the PO had the tension very tight, IE: I could barely move the chain. I will be putting a new chain on soon.

1) how much movement should I have in the chain w/the tensioner?

2) if it's too loose, will the chain skip off the tensioner?

3) are the tensioners with the springs better? I could weld one in, but already have this one...

I know this is a super old thread, but for anyone else who's curious:

1) Hayne's manual species about 3/4" or 20mm slack
2) Yes, if tension is too loose it can even come off the sprockets
3) Tensioners with springs make chain installation easier and usually allow you to adjust tension

Hope you figured out your particular years ago haha
