Beginner question: is it possible to swap engines between the older and newer XS650s? For instance, if I had an older bike (XS1, XS1B, XS2) with a completely blown engine, would I have to find another 256 to replace it, or could I put a 447 in it instead?

Thanks for the reply. Do you know if there would be fitment issues? For instance, would the frame need to be modified at all to allow this? Or are they similar enough that no modifications would be necessary? I ask because I can't currently weld.

I thought I read there is a difference in the forward mount point, but I’m not sure. For sure, the forward engine mount is different on the 447 engine bikes.

A 447 engine will go into 72 or 73 frame, no problem. Make sure you use the 72-73 front motor mounts.
I believe all you have to do on a 71-72 is modify the 71-72 front mounts. Not the frame just the 2 pieces that connect the frame to the motor.
On all 4 years you have to use the early head steady's.
