I have grey (not black) smoke at start up, and some miss-firing at low revs.

Looking at the threads these symptoms point to low-level oil ingress. There are various suggestions: valve guide seals, head gasket, and the oil scraper piston ring. I am inclined to valves.

This engine hadn't run for a couple of years until I got hold of it recently, and I've only just got it ready to ride - only a few short test runs and one 60 mile round trip.

I have the carbs set-up correctly so it is not running rich (as I first thought). At first it was just the plug on the right cylinder becoming blackened, today, on another short run, it was both plugs.

I checked the torque as correct on the cylinder head bolts.

QUESTIONS

1. How many miles should I run this engine to see if it settles down? (I read an engine not run for a while might need to be run to evacuate particles that might be collected around the valves, which allows low-level ingress).

2. Should I need to get into the cylinder head are there any threads or videos showing how to sort out valve guide oil seals?
