The spring is internal. It goes below the threaded portion, over the stepped area. Here's the mix screw on a set of '78-'79 carbs. No spring showing because it's inside the hole, on the stepped portion of the mix screw .....

well, the photo shows those little bastards got O-rings on them and an O-ring would stop the thing vibrating loose.
However, the script sez the O-rings may or may not fit your carburettor.
WTF, eh?
But, I remember a post asking about little plastic rotation stops on XS650 carb needles?
Perhaps those are what's missing?
I don't think anyone sells the springs. Used ones from an old carb set are probably your only option. You can still get the spring for the '77 and earlier mix screws but I can't say whether that will fit or not.
