I drilled out the hole
Tapped with included tap and the put the helicoil in but it will only go so far in and it's stuck tight I mean as in it won't go in any further
I'm afraid if I try and back it out it will break off the tab at the end
Can i just pull it out or will a piece break of in there
Or dill it out or use the tap I'm at a srandstill here and I have locktite on the sob too
I also carefully ran the tap in there twice to make sure the threads were good

I can't even pull out the insert tool

I got the insert tool and the helicoil out of it and I used the tap that was supplied with the kit but it wasn't a bottoming tap

The tool to insert the helicoil was 3-4 mm past the tang of the helicoil when i went to insert it
and removing the tool it broke the end off but at least that didn't stay in the hole

I should have drilled the hole deeper and not put the tool so far past the tang of the helicoil

Though I hope never to need to do this, many thanks to @Mikey and @jetmechmarty for their valuable insights. The wisdom from experience is priceless, and learning for the experience of others is a life saver.
Hey buddy don't follow me to close
I'm a accident waiting to happen
edit: I'm an accident that's going to happen :doh:

Well crap! It's tough to tell from pic (and tool pic blurry); how deep is that hole? Appears to only be 7-8mm? Threads don't appear fully cut to take coil (maybe because not a bottoming tap)

Did you use a bottoming tap? Did the insert go all the way to the bottom? Yes and yes? Did @Jim tell you anticlockwise will break the tang? Do it.

Nip off the excess at the top.

Thanks Marty !!!!! And DE
My laptop doesn't get a very good signal out in the shop so there's always a delay in my postings

The hole as measured by my micrometer was 11mm but of course that happened to be in the center of where I stopped the drill bit not the actual end of where the tap would end

Have faith, my friend. You are surrounded by the best brains for anything XS650! There's nothing they can't pull us out of. I'm happy and grateful for all of you out there. Thanks

What size bottoming tap could i use to cut thread for the helicoil ?

I don't remember how deep that hole should be; tend to think it should be deeper than ~10mm - certainly deeper than the coil is long....

What's the plan?

Agreed. A bottoming tap is required. When I couldn't get one, I cut the end off of a standard tap.

For the record, one of my intake bolts is 1/4 20.
how are you cutting the end off
And how do you clean up the end of the tap

I'm going to drill deeper for sure (not get crazy) retap the hole with the supplied tap and try it again slowly and carefully
I don't understand why that insert tool would go so far past that tang
The tang does go towards the bottom correct ?
