I was looking at the set I have and just noticed the small end has no copper coating. The rods look like they were dipped then machined after. Anyone else have a set. Seems like a waste to coat and machine it off. Just wondering if this is normal for these rods.

The copper wash is just a rust preventive measure during manufacture.

Thanks Leo. I know you have a set of the rods in your 750 motor. I was looking at the crank we did and just noticed. I think I read somewhere on the stock rods if the copper was worn off you should replace the rods.

The way to check for wear, in the book, is to clean the rod and pin, a thin coat of motor oil and with the pin in thr rod check for the pin wobbling in the rod. Most likely to be up and down. The rod would wear up/down more because that's the way the forces of the moving pistons excert on the pin.If any play they are out of spec.
Seems a bit backyard mechanics way of doing things than a factory way.

Thanks again leo. Very useful information. Since I never had a rod with the coating wore off. I would not know if is fact or fiction.
