Hello everyone, I'm new, and this is my first post. Happy to have found this site with so many Yamaha lovers and experts. Looking forward to getting valuable guidance from you all. At the moment, I'm stumped with getting the correct model/year of my bike and I need this to order parts for it.
I'm told it's probably an XS650 circa 78/79.
Model: Yamaha 650
Chassis & engine number : 447-805153. It has the same no on headstock and engine (447-805153). I bought it as a used bike I988 in Dubai and have absolutely no other info. Can anyone give some specific description of typical things to look for in a 78 or 79 model, and how would I know if it's an XS or other? Appreciate any help offered. Thanks.

Welcome Khapty,

That's an interesting Vin no. On the chart, (in the link below), it is a 79F model that is either Canadian, Oceania or some other country, (not specified), and these countries used the same model #. Pakaistan is not a specified destination for sales on the vin charts. Oceania encompasses 2 countries and a most of the detailed information, (like wiring diagrams and some other details), are US specific due to the amount of these bikes sold there...................probably no differences in your model though. Pics will help us to spot any changes done to your bike as they did swap parts from one to the other easily without any modification..........74-79 especially

I remember seeing some where with a pic, Pakistan used some XS650's as a police bike.

tell us a bit about the bike and your situation and what are your plans going forward. parts would be hard to get in your country i presume.

Yea, did i mention Pics, and lots of them........

Well, as I've already stripped it and sent parts for painting, I can only do pics of what's left at the moment. Will upload soon. Unfortunately it had to be left in the garage a good 25 years as I was working abroad. Spares for it are impossible in UAE (where I originally got the bike) or in Pakistan. Interesting to learn that it was once used by the Police here. In the 60s and 70s the only 2 wheelers in Pakistan were Triumphs (Speed Twin and Tiger Cub) and Vespas. For a while the Police used Harleys (Electraglide) but I didn't know about Yamahas. Interesting indeed.

what colour was the tank. On the chart i have their is supposed to be a Maxi Maroon colour for the 79F and i have never seen that colour on the 79F. All the ones i have seen are from the states and are the blue as per the 79F in the link i posted.

Don't worry we love pics of parts and bikes apart.................makes those of us lazybone with works in progress going on 10, 15, 20, 30, years feel better

The tank is blue! Considering all the inputs from members, it's almost certainly an XS650F/1979. I've taken a lot of pics and trying to upload....

Finally managed to upload some pics. Hope some of the guys can identify positively whether it's an XS650 or XS650s, 1978 or 79? It has a blue tank and VIN 447---- so I presume it is a US model. All help greatly appreciated. Thanks

Your vin no identifies it as an, other than US model, i posted the information in post no 3............. Its a 79F standard model

Has a pass switch on the left bar switch which the US didn't get. your bike has a single 20amp fuse, Think the Us had a 4 bank fuse setup. Has the extra long rear guard that the Euro market had

Good candidate to do whatever you want to make it, certainly have your work cut out for yourself.

Great observation and priceless knowledge, Skull. Thanks. What about the blue tank? I thought that came only on US models. The rear guard was changed by me way back in 85 because the original was rusted, but I don't remember whether that was long or short. What about the '447-10' on the sticker for battery layout? Does that mean anything? I remember the chart you sent earlier and the VIN no shows it as anything but US! The other specifics like 4 fuses and pass switch can't be doubted. So I guess I'll settle for EURO, XS650F, 1979......
