My 72 build

Ok i posted on here a few times asking questions and trying to buy stuff, guess its time i introduce myself and show my build. Im Wes from albuquerque NM, this is my first bike im attempting to do so im sure ill do alot of mistakes and ask alot of questions, but thats how you learn. Im usually building old vw's but ive always wanted to do a old yamaha, just love the way they look and sound.

Picked up a 650 off craigslist, was an old guys who passed away had been sittin for a long time, was told it was a 76 so i thought it was. Lady wanted $500 for it but motor was froze and no title, so got it for $200. When i got home, took side cover off, sprayed some wd40 on shit and it kicked free, nice. Well after posting on here gggGary helped me out and turns out its a 72 xs2 and not a 76 afterall. Front forks are jacked, the tubes are stuck in bottoms, seals were bad and filled up with water of the years. Oh and yes i removed allen from bottom and used heat still wouldnt budge, po had extended tubes on it also, sissy bar, ect... the whole 70's look, ripped it all off. I have some 75 trees and forks on the way, a sportster tank, and hopefully some mags to get me going.

Going to hardtail it, maybe 5 stretch 2 inch drop, paint tank and fender orange, black out alot of motor parts. So anyways ill shut up now, ill post what pics i have, im sure you guys will give me shit for cutting my swing arm up just to see what stretch i would like, and an early tank i didnt know was early, oh well, :banghead:

Still welding and grinding in your bare feet I see.:D How's it going Wes, Ben here from Tucson. I just finished my XS650 chopper last winter, have another one I want to build, but have to get my '59 panel done first.

Oh, and use any tank but a sporty tank. So played out.:banghead:
I got this one I'll give you if you're coming to Tucson in Oct.

thanks, so see if someone can answer my newb question, i did a search, got tired of reading, so here it goes. I have a 72 xs2, long story short im putting trees and forks from a 75 on it and mags off a 81. My question is, i know i have to put a neck spacer for the trees, but will the 81 mag front wheel bolt right up, or will i have problems with spacing? Since im doing a hardtail, im sure the rear is fine, no worries there.

Sorry if its been covered, i couldnt find it, hope someone can help out, thanks in advance guys.

you may have cut up a tank that you didnt know was early, but i think it looks sick. very different from the norm. guess you decided against finishing it and using it but it looks pretty cool to me.

Thanks man, actually i am going to finish it up, my buddy is going to tig weld some bottoms on it, and see how it turns out. I have to agree with ben though, sporty tanks are played out a bit, but they do look good i think, so i will try the sporty, suzuki tank and the yamaha tank and see what looks best. Nice to have options i guess,.

Hi Wes, Off subject but is that bus on bags? Looks killer from what I can see :D

hey man, nope its static, 4 inch adjustable beam adjusters all the way down, 4 1/2 inch drop spindles, 2 inch tubs up front, custom wheels, notched frame for tie rods,:thumbsup:. Here i know its not a bike but ill post a few pics since i have no actual progress on my bike, damn vws taking up all my time and space, lol.

when i got it, 70's gasser style, lol

oh actually i got just a little bike stuff to post, i saw a HD wheel for sale on craigslist today for super cheap with a good tire, bought it. Dont know if im going to get a gary poh offset sprocket kit and run it or just throw it in the attic.

might look cool with the center blacked out, and run the mag wheel up front, dont know

finally vw is out of my garage, my mags showed up, so i had some space and time to take the spokes off and slap on the new forks, bars, and rims today. Not alot of progress, but now i can build me a table and start doing the frame work  heres just a few pics, nothing special but im liking it.

ok graybikemike, tire is coming off and rim is getting shipped to you, thanks for being patient

im still pondering that damn 180 wheel and tire, i have to make my mind up before i start the frame
2011-10-17221532.jpg

maybe paint the center black, leave lip polished  sorry cheesy paint program edit, lol

You going to do anything with that king queen seat? PM me if you want to get rid of it.

Thanks for the comments, Yeah the 180 will fit with an offset sprocket kit from gary poh, and the hardtail im going to make for the back of it. So, got that other tank on to see if i like it, i like the shape of it except for the back of the tank, to square cause its made to butt up to a seat. I dont know, almost time to start cutting the frame, got to build my jig and get the tube and its a go.

Well heres the pic of the tank

Hey man, nice build you have going:thumbsup:It looks like you've got a pretty good eye for what works. Can't wait to see it progress!

hey thanks man for the compliment, yeah this is my first build, first bike period, lol, its fun, def a change from vw's, lol. Well sold the rear wheel and tire so had to rig up the 180 so it would still roll around, think it will look good on the back of the hardtail.

2011-10-20181558.jpg

still like the sporty tank the best

Ok so want the bike a little bigger, maybe 1 more inch stretch in back and rake the front a few degrees, but I don't know how hard it is to rake the neck, don't want to mess up the bike. Any info or pics of a stock raked neck would be helpful, maybe I'm just too fat for the bike, lol.
