I have a stock 1979 XS650 Special and want to know if there are any alternatives the the brake light. Something smaller, maybe go with the cafe seat they sell on Ebay?

This works well on a stock rear fender, mounted low. Some of the Special rear fenders come with a 3 hole mount for the license lamp, that gives you the two lower holes to start with and then just need to drill the upper hole.....not sure how it would match with a cafe seat, though it works well with the '79 Special stock seat.

Lends itself more to Brit styling. Looks tons better than the limp noodle imho.

I run the Lucas style as well. Only aluminum. I like it much better than that eye sore stock one.
