Type of oil

Sucked in damn it.
Life has gotten more complicated since cats
Cats hate zinc so oil no long has zinc
Does the XS NEED zinc? dunno
but AFAIK the only oil that has zinc available "around town"
Is Valvoline VR1 20-50 what I run.
You want a deep dive the Norton guru Jim Comstock did a serious and meticulous test series of "all major" brands.

couple caveats;
oil formulations change, FREQUENTLY, the labels give little or no info about changes. see above about cats
Nortons have "engine only" oil, no need to worry about the wet clutch. (well mostly) they are British, the crankcase/primary "seal" seals in name only.
Gary is it ZR1 or VR1? Started investigations for local source and pricing. So far I’ve been using BelRay EXL 20W50 mineral oil. A bit more cost than no name brands up here.

Round here all the auto stores even walrus mart have VR1
which is probably a death knoll for it. Cuz the dum basses will kill their cats, then the gummerment bans it like a rabid trucker.

Valvoline 4-stroke has 1120 ppm zinc according to official sheet and is probably half the cost. I'd consider stocked by Waldo's as "around town"

That's right but the conventional racing oil isn't that expensive, both VR1 and 4-stroke oil are $7 Qt. at farm n fleet.

The full synthetic 4-stroke is $7.50 at Wallyville, the regular rustic folks vers is $4.50

Between the two, the manufacturer of both of them explicitly says don't use this use that. If you don't trust their recommendations concerning their oil, you shouldn't trust their oil either...

My theory is that any 15W40 or 20W50 oil is fine in our bikes. I usually buy what's on special. I have a dusty 5l jug of Mobil Delvac bought on special at Peavey Mart (Ex TSC store) waiting for the weather to warm up. I spent just over $20 and will get almost 2 full oil changes out of it.

There is an interesting (tho somewhat contentious :poke: ) thread from 2014 regarding 15w-40 vs 20w-50:
