Right. But it slides over the spring very tightly and there wasn't a washer or spring seat for the springs to keep spacer from sliding over springs. There is a washer in drawing on page 124 in Clymers manual. I can't remember where that spacer was set to save my life. Anyway, thanks for trying to help. I'm going to have to call Race Tech. They don't mention reusing stock spacers when you figure out preload for the PVC they supply. I guess it would make sence to leave ot out.
 
That appears to be the stock spring spacer from a '77 set of forks. The '78 and newer sets had none. The '77 set used a short plain plug cap. The '78 and newer forks had a longer adjustable preload cap so I guess Yamaha figured the spacer was no longer needed. Yes, you need a washer between it and the spring .....
