Tell Me If This Makes Sense

While riding my '83 I notice that at above 45 MPH I get a little "stuttering" while the choke is off. If I put the choke on it goes away. When I rebuilt the carbs last year I stepped the mains up one size. Would it make sense that the choke is putting more fuel into the cylinders and...

Charging Problem - Gonna Need Electrical Help

Ok guys, I'm a little confused. My battery died today after riding to work. Let me rephrase that...my battery was low on the way to work. Just after pulling out this a.m. I noticed my blinkers weren't blinking. Ok, no big deal. I rode 15 miles on the highway and when I went to exit I hit...

    Setting Valve Clearances (Confused)

I'm hearing some noise from my '83 Heritage Special...it sounds like it's coming from my valves but I'm not 100% certain. In my manual it says 0.004 and 0.006 for the valves but I recall reading somewhere (for the life of me I can't recall where) that they should be 0.0024 and 0.006...

Engine Rebuilt...Can't Get the @#$%er Started

Just venting...after rebuilding my engine I had it started about a month or so ago. We're looking at nearly 60 degrees tomorrow and I can't get the dirty slut started. I'm currently draining the gas as I'll concede...it's old. Maybe some fresh go juice will help her start. More to come after...

Wanted - Starter for '83 Heritage Special

Looking for a good starter for my '83 Heritage Special. My starter won't even turn the engine over now that I've rebuilt it. I'd like to spend something around $20/$25 (shipped to 48618) if at all possible. Thanks.

    Float Valve Seat O-ring Size???

Real quick...I'm cleaning my carbs and I'm 99% certain my o-rings for the float seat should be replaced. Any thoughts on what size o-ring it takes? I'm guessing a #5 or #6 but wanted to run a poll and see what the seasoned veterans (aka old timers) have used.

    Possible XS400 Trade

I ran across an XS400 on craigslist. I'm offering the guy my 6 year old John Deere lawn mower with a 42" cutting deck as an even trade. Here is the link. Am I crazy or going to get a good deal if he decides to do it?

Engine Rebuild & Beautification (Shot Blasting)

I've torn down my engine and I'm ready to order a bunch of parts, seals, etc. This will be my visual diary of the rebuild process. I'm sticking with stock pistons and not going oversize as the current stock pistons are in good shape. I've cleaned the hell out of them and they are looking...

    Connecting Rod Removal?

Tore the engine down. I have the crank sitting on the bench and I'm seeing that the copper has worn off the connecting rods. As I understand, that is an indication that the connecting rods need to be replaced. How do I take them off? Obviously I need to dismantle the crank from each end...

    Long Head Bolt

Anyone know where I can score one of the long head bolts that secures into the lower engine case half? I managed to bend one of mine and should replace it rather than try and straighten it.

    Suggestions Needed for Removing Exhaust

I'm in the process of tearing the bike apart right now (at least over the next couple weeks) to remove the engine. I'm planning to replace the cam chain and both guides. I'm at the point right now that I've loosened the exhaust at the engine and on both sides at the frame. How do I get...

    I'm Leaking Oil Something Fierce

Ok, I've been putting off tearing my engine down for a year now (since I got the bike). Now it looks like I'm going to have to accelerate my plans for tearing down the engine. I'm leaking oil pretty bad...so bad it is at the point that I don't think it'll be a good idea to ride until I solve...

Right Carb Leaking (Finally Threw In The Towel)

I've adjusted the float level on my right hand carb a good dozen times, if not more. I just can't get it to stop spewing fuel out of the main air passage and into my filter. I finally threw in the towel two days ago and ordered a new float, float needle and float needle seat. I actually...

    Skunk and My Dogs

I often set a live trap out to catch squirrels in my yard. I relocate them a few miles away in a heavily wooded area. The reason I don't want them here is because they chew on the wire for the invisible fence that keeps my dogs in the yard. Incidentally, my dogs are a lab/collie mix and a...

    Tow Behind Trailer?

Is it possible to put a tow behind trailer on our bikes? I see one on craigslist locally and would consider it if: 1. It is possible. 2. At the right price. Thanks.
