Hello all.
Canadian here from Nova Scotia. New to older bikes (spent most of my childhood on dirt bikes, just not motorcycles) and bike building. Just picked up a 1980 XS650s (Special) that I am looking to bob and make my own over the next couple years. She’s in decent shape. However.. Little bit of electrical issues with intermittent lights and electric ignition not working, just kick start. Kick start is a bitch on it, so I’m looking to get the electronic ignition working again but don’t know where to start.
I tested the horn once, gave one blat, and that was all the juice she had. Brake light works. Headlights intermittent. Flashers stay fully light. Sometimes don’t work at all/intermittent.
I assume new wiring and battery is the easiest way to go so I will cross that bridge shortly.
Would like to get the electronic ignition going to make life easier and eventually get the kickstart back to where it should be. would like to have both.
New battery is first step, but can’t seem to find much on wiring for electronic ignition. Start button/ignition wired to starter?

TC Bros has the full XSCHARGE ignition kit for 300USD. Should that have most of what I need to get going?
Took this on to teach myself a bit more mechanically and electronically. Spent years as a chain hoist repair technician, and currently a water plant operator with lots of motors and pumps rebuilds, so not unfamiliar to mechanics by any means, but certainly don’t know everything and don’t mind asking for help.

Any help is appreciated.

Welcome to the forum. Do you mean it runs but the electric start won't work, or the electronic ignition's broke and it won't run?

Need a battery in good condition. The TCI ignition wont work if the battery is suss. Indicators point to a flat battety as well

Nova Scotia Eh. My grandfather was from Cape Breton.

Thanks Jim.
It does run. Had er going yesterday. Electric start is broke but I’m going to assume it’s battery related and maybe some spotty wiring where there are light issues. Seller claimed it worked as of last year.

Awesome. Thank you! Gives me a good starting point and then work on replacing wiring from there out. Appreciate the insight

Seller spoke of left side plug being not so great. Went to check it this morning and wire to plug was severed at the elbow on top of plug. Lightly touched it and it fell out elbow and all corroded. May be the issue there. Photo of the old girl attached

Need some help/guidance. Took tank off to replace battery today. Lots of shit splices with electrical tape underneath. This cable coming pop out from under it. What is this responsible for? Coming out of the front of the casing for the kickstart. Don’t see where it’s to screw back on to. Square milled key coming out of it.

It would be a good idea to get a basic manual (Haynes or Clymer) and read through it to get an idea of what you are looking at. Once you have a build route to follow things become more clear; and we can all help with more purpose.

Sounds good. I will look around online for one.
