TCI Replacement 2020 It Works

No advance with the HEI as is.
That is correct. The HEI will require the original advance unit.

I'm using the HEI to get a feel for it's signal levels etc because I've not played with one before and it was less then $10 . The cool thing about the HEI is it will work with the stock points.

I have a late model Gonzo box coming tomorrow to try out because the interior shots @LanzSilva posted look different from the early boxes .

Extremely interesting experiment. I have been wondering if a hall effect sensor (used widely for crank or camshaft position sensing) could be utilised to trigger the gonzo box. There's a few advantages that I can see to use one. But I just don't know if that approach will work as a gonzo box trigger or not. We might get to know the answer from the data you are collecting.

Thanks for sharing all this stuff.

I've avoided hall effect sensors because they are a silicon device. Mounting one on the side of the hottest part of the engine right in the path of heat from the exhaust seems sketchy to me..

Ingrid, my Volvo 745 drove me batty with random engine shutoffs driving down the road for over a year. Replaced relays pumps etc and then discovered it was the hall effect crank sensor that was intermittently failing.

My Grand Cherokee did the same thing .

GM , Ford and Dodge all used coil pickups on their early systems . Almost all bikes today use a pickup coil.

As the great philosopher Paul Simon once noted.

"Who am I to piss against the wind"

With all this said the Gonzo should fire just fine from a correct polarity hall effect.

Thanks. That's great information. One day when I've got the 650 running I might just buy a cheap eBay gonzo box and a dirt cheap hall effect sensor to see if it triggers.

Yippee . 4 sparks per kick!!!!! Rawhide

The reluctor is plain steel, no magnetic field to them. The mopar pickup has the highest peak to peak output of all the pickups I have measured.

Very happy to see it sparking at kick starting speeds on the the cam which turns half as fast as the crank.

Question if anyone knows. Can this be used somehow on a 4 cylinder bike? or a different model?
I have 2 XJ650 bikes and they are 2 coils for cylinders 1/4 and 2/3.
The XJ650 TCI is a known failure point due to some manufacturing defects where parts delaminate/cold solder fail
Luckily, I have not experanced this yet

Theoretically, my XS1100 could run on two Gonzo boxes. It’s a matter of how much are you able and willing to do.

Hats off to you. That's looking pretty impressive and within the capabilities of anyone with a shed, it seems.

Problem with a pair of Gonzo boxes on the UJM four-cylinder is keeping them in sync. Sure, you can trigger the pair from the original pickups, more than likely, but you need a common advance mechanism, just like the older ones. Trying to replace an electronic advance unit with a pair of Gonzos will be difficult (not impossible, nothing's impossible, except ski-ing through a revolving door).

A online site that I hated. I just downloaded a local app for the mac to get more control over the process. But cool . Tried posting on a whim and it worked.:)

Google video to gif.

Google gives back about a gazillion hits. Thought that since you know which one works, you might share?
Rather than, you know... me goin' through the list, gettin' frustrated... and giving up after a thousand or so tries... :cautious:
