Just out of curiosity - Airplane Guys

Ukraine has ginned up over 200 new drone companies since the war started. Predicted to make over a million of 'em in '24. Not bad for a country constantly under attack...

Yupper and we could be helping that go faster better. (maybe we are???) But we're sending our old war toys over and the M-I-C is ginning up new contracts, fancy toys, that no one can afford to build in war winning quantities.

Just a cool old airplane pic that popped up on FB....

From elsewhere;
Eastern Air Lines L1049G
One afternoon, my father, an Eastern pilot left me in hanger, while he went up to operations. I was in the custody of the guard. While I was looking over one of the planes in the hanger an old man in a grey 3 piece suit came in and yelled at me. He took over to the guard and wanted to know why I was there. After the guard explained the situation the old man told the guard that if my dad returned before we came back to tell him that I was with him. We went outside and there was a magnificent Super G Constellation being worked on. He then asked me if I knew what plane it was. I said yes, it is a Connie. The old man then gave me a lecture that the plane was a Constellation, not a Connie. I never, to this day made that mistake again . He then proceeded to give me a guided tour of the Constellation from tail to cockpit.
As we were coming down from the plane he noticed a mechanic working on the number 2 engine. He handed me his hat and climbed up the scaffolding to the where the mechanic was. They said a few words and the old man provided two extra hands to help the mechanic. When finished, he wiped his hands off on the mechanics apron and came back to me. We went back inside the hanger where my dad was waiting. My dad and the old man talked for a while and then the old man rubbed his big hand through my hair and said he hoped to see me again soon.
As my dad and I walked back to our car, an old 1954 Rambler we called Rosie, because of its color, my dad looked down at me and said, "So you and Captain Rickenbacker are best friends now."
The Constellation has a special place in my heart.

What a wonderful story. Captain Rickenbacker was one of my earliest hero's. I read his autobiography in either 3rd or 4th grade. One of the things that has stuck with me that he said was that when he downed an enemy plane, he always hoped to see the pilot's chute open. You are blessed to have met him.

Not wishing to enter into political realm. I assume based on history that Imperial Russia will defeat any difficulties, as they have overwhelming military superiority and resource within about 1500 miles of their base turf. See expert "smoothiex12" Soviet military education, US Citizen that loves America, taught at West Point. See several book. Cautions, Andre will probably upset. The pace of the affair between NATO and Rus in zone 404 seems to be set, modulated, so as to induce the NATO side to send materials to the Red army for disposal by destruction. They say that they see no reason to hurry, as NATO is very cooperative.

Saying speed of missile is silly, the speed constantly changes. They say in thick air last few thousand feet maybe M3. But what interests me, and no one here has replied to, is question of how to steer in a plasma cloud. Missile maneuvers..ok, how? Ostensibly and reasonably in terms of physics, probably, no radio gps etc nav, no celestial, and no wings...and they can hit moving target type ship with some types. Our Chinese fellers say they can also do this. Like kindergarten, they share their toys...pretty soon Comrade Kim maybe too...and the various other classical civilizational states? Persia? India? Inevitably...

Of course all the Ruskie stuff builds on old soviet projects. They designed, in the 50's I think, a large supersonic ram jet ICBM, got well along building...and stopped...that's probably the commie granddaddy of Kinzhal and Zircon. Oh? Never heard of it? Well, one must study... It was a secret project, after all! Project boss commie died, project kinna far out, cautious Kremlin opted to copy US and build pure rocket ICBM, air breather project cancelled. There was a spirited discussion of the Soviet ramjet ICBM a few years ago at "Moon of Alabama". I caught it and did some research. There are even a few images on the net, or were.

fwiw worth I personally doubt that the fine fellows of zone 404 have managed to hit even one, and I doubt that those fellows are operating the A/D in zone, they've managed to get perhaps 500K dead or hurt bad. A/D takes trained skill take time. But there's no point in arguing mere opinion. I am of opinion that Patriot complexes are prime target for Ruskie missile, and the crews are NATO active duty gone TD/Y ...until they become "cargo 200", as they say.. maybe after the war we will know all about it, or maybe not. We never watch TV, so I have no idea what lies may be told there about the affairs of the world.

Again, how steer? How navigate? How see target? When inside an ionized electrically conducting cloud.... But especially how to steer. It seems like, with the heavy acceleration, shifting CM would affect path...that's my hunch or clue, and I'm probably wrong. Another probably wrong would be injectors fixed X/Y that added, say iodine/alcohol (very small amounts, gram measures of) in asymmetrical way that changed the gas pressures inside the cloud and deflected the missile accordingly. It's a mystery.

Only side I favor in war is peace. I have zero political opinion past they're all crazy. Speaking again, historically, it does appear that W3 is well begun, and will probably change everything we have known. That is personally very sad. A chill east wind... Little orphans, flies, stench, dogs eating the dead... Better ride motorcycle and drink beer. Maybe burn one if that's your thing... :) Examining the machines hurts noone, and it's interesting. How they hell do they steer in plasma?

I was an admirer of Rickenbacker as well. I introduced him to my son and built him a tribute soap box racer. It wasn't the fastest, but it won First Place.
