    My new 1979 xs750 project

Last weekend I picked up a 1979 Yamaha xs750. I found it on craigslist and it seemed like a good deal. Here are the 'before' pictures I took of the bike in the previous owner's garage: You'll notice it has the world's largest fairing and luggage rack as well as a set of hard bags. The...

Vintage style mini turn signals, pics and how to do it cheap

I really like the stock look of the xs650's, but I recently saw a bike with some cool vintage looking mini turn signals and I got the urge to change mine. No cutting, modding, or rigging of the stock bike or wiring is required. I have seen lots of mini / custom turn signal installs on this...

Adjusting points gap WITHOUT changing timing

I'm familiar with both the points gapping and timing procedure, that's NOT what this thread is about. I installed new points, set the gaps to 0.016, then set the timing on my bike about 3,000 miles ago. My points gap is now 0.011. The bike runs and starts great, but I'm going to re-gap them...

Poll: Stock or cut up? What is the 'trend'?

Like the title says, I have been wondering if stock / restorations are more or less popular that chopped/ bobbed/ café 'cut up' bikes? Personally, I prefer stock bikes and restore antique bikes of many makes back to original. In general, it is getting really hard for me to find good...

Tired of broken side cover latches? Cheap perminant fix here, with pics!

Are you tired of your aftermarket side cover latches breaking? I am! The reproduction latches from Mikes XS, really suck. The plastic that the black knob is made from is so soft that it cracks and falls off after only a thousand miles or so. OEM Yamaha latches are great, but getting harder...

Wanted - Side cover latch / knob for 1979

Like the title says, I need one side cover latch for my 1979. for reference, its this part: http://www.mikesxs.net/product/02-6502.html The ones from Mikes are $13, and total CRAP. The plastic that the knob is made out of is so soft that it stretches / cracks, and the knob falls off, and the...

Seat hinge location on standard frame?

Does anyone know how far apart the seat hinges are on a STANDARD xs650 frame? Also, for point of reference, can you tell me how far forward from the frame cross bar the front hinge is? Likewise, how far behind the frame crossbar is the rear hinge? In other words, I'm in need of 3...

Standard vs Special vs Special II seats ?

I Have heard that ALL Standard models, and the Special II (up to 1980) all use the same side hinge seat setup. While the seat pans, foam, and covers are different between the Standard and Special II... ARE THE SEATS INTERCHANGEABLE?? (are the Standard seats interchangeable with the 1979-1980...

    Trouble triumph style decals

I just made this decal in Photoshop. I'm sure you have seen them before, "Trouble" written in the Triumph font. There are a few for sale online, but none that I really liked. I'm going to have these printed out by a local decal shop, I think some will be black, as in the photo, and some will...

New side cover decals!! check them out

This is a side cover decal that I made for my xs650. My bike is a 1979 Special, and I absolutely HATE the horrible gold plastic "SPECIAL" badges. I made this in Photoshop and am having a local sign shop print me out a bunch on automotive adhesive vinyl. The area inside the grey box behind...

    Maximum sustained safe cruising RPM?

I'm pretty new to the XS650, but have a bunch of experience with antique bikes. I recently got a 1979 XS650, which is my 'new' daily driver. Its mostly stock, and only has 2,900 original miles, and I am the second owner. When going down the highway around 70 mph, the bike is cruising at...

Hoking up stator causes huge voltage drop, bike wont charge, HELP!?

Like the title says, when I hook up the green wire coming from my regulator to the positive brush on the stator the voltage at the battery drops to 9.5v. (my battery is brand new and fully charged, and reads 12.6 volts when the green wire is un-hooked and when the battery is out of the bike)...
