83 with a 78 motor

So I put a 78-79 series XS motor in my 83 xs650. Everything is in and fits nicely.
Problem I am running into is electric. Shorting out and blowing main fuse. Traced it back to the alternator. I heard somewhere that I would need to use plastic screws on the alternator hookups. Is this valid?
Anyone know of any differences in electrics that I would need to do?

Will post pictures of completed project... If I can ever finish.

If you're running with the '78 stator and using the '83 regulator then you will need to do the the nylon screws. Check this thread out http://www.xs650.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6477

If you changed the rotor and stator so you could use the TCI from the '83 then you have something else going on, maybe a bad regulator.
