Hello,
I look up one to replace the broken one on my 1980 special. From the search there are 2 versions (attached pictures). I suppose the one with the push hole at the edge is later model? Because it is lighter to push?
Sorry if this is asked before. Thanks!

The one with the shorter hole to hole measurement will give more clutch plate separation, and require more effort at the handlebar lever. The longer one will be easier to pull but clutch adjustment will be more critical to get a clean clutch release.

Another option that might be easier to come by over in your part of the world is one from an XS400. Many of us feel it's the best compromise between clutch pull and plate release. Make sure you get the 1L9 version. Not all models are compatible. Make sure you get the housing it screws into also.

You don't absolutely have to get the 400 female nylon part of the worm gear assembly, it is the same as the 650 one, but if available, I would get it just to have a spare. The 1L9 worm assembly needs some minor modding to make it work best but it's easy, just a little sanding off the top of the nylon worm part. Details are here in post #65 .....

Does anyone have the XS400 worm gear assembly part number?

Yes, a part number isn't much help now because they are N.L.A. You need to scrounge a used one. But they're very easy to identify because they have "1L9" stamped right on them .....

The nylon female part was used on several different models so is pretty easy to scrounge as well .....

In fact, that's how I discovered the 1L9 worm, scrounging female worms from my dealer's boneyard, lol.
