OK, where the crescent shaped filter inserts into the RH case on My 79 XS 650, the slotted screw was about to fall out of the retainer. How far is it supposed to push the ball and spring in? I guess this is the oill bypass? What keeps the slotted screw from working its way out with vibration? Thanks!

There was never a setting given for this that I've seen. Accepted practice is to run it flush with the top of the filter bolt. It can't fall out because the cover is there.

Thanks 5T, that makes sense. I was just concerned , as the screw seems pretty loose in the bore. I may go into one of My spare motors and see what shape they are in. My manual doesnt even mention it.

When I first got mine, I thought the screw was too loose as well so I tightened it down. Then I read about running it flush so I loosened it back up. Also, if you tighten it down, you're going to increase the amount of pressure required to activate the by-pass, probably not a good thing.
