I've got a help wanted ad for a 78 xs650...
But a friend said that a 72 is better, because of the flat frame, rather then the cruiser style later frames...
Probably frame from around 76 standard frame these have been stiffened up from the early xs1/2 frames,
Although the early xs1/2 frames are a lot lighter, so with a later swing arm decent shocks and later 35mm forks this could make a decent racer
1974 to 1984 should be good for your purposes. The only difference I expect you could care about is the shock position. On Specials, the top shock mount is a bit forward of where it is on a standard. Most of the difference is stuff like tabs for bodywork.
Due to the rules, I think you want a 1977 or 1978 XS650. The 1977 got 35 mm forks as opposed to 34 mm. The options will be better for the later forks. The 1978 Special had a rear disc brake. There are differences associated with that. If that's not an issue, the Special is likely the cost effective option. Otherwise, it's a 1977 or '78 standard that you want. Those are both coveted in the XS650 fan base.
