Can anyone help clear up my confusion regarding the need/requirement for a shim behind the disc brake pads.
The partial Yamaha maintenance mail I have shows a shim, however, the major public maintenance manuals show no such shim (see below.)

The shims were something Yamaha added on later models to help ward off brake squeal. If your brakes don't then no need for the shims. Mine were fine with stock pads but when I changed to aftermarket pads, they squealed. So, I put the shims in and that fixed it. Unfortunately, you can't buy the shims. I scrounged mine from newer parts calipers.

So I’ve got new brake pads (round sort) in my B model. They work great but “rattle” at tickover unless I apply the front brake. I have shims that I could fit but i’m finding it almost impossible to fit them onto the pads and keep everything lined up to put the front wheel back on. Do I need to fit them? will it stop the pads rattling? And if it helps. .. how the hell am I supposed to fit them onto the pads and into the caliper? is there a secret to this that I’m not aware of? Thanks.

It takes a third hand and a little fiddling around to get those together. I’ve used a piece of blue tape to hold the pads in place until I got the disk between them.
