I'm currently in the meticulous phase of getting my carbs sorted on a 1980 xs650 special with Mikuni BS34 carbs. From doing a bit of research here and elsewhere, I'll likely be replacing the butterfly shaft seals.

I spotted this link from 5Twins regarding some Suzuki seals that work with 1980 BS34 carbs..

Real question is, should I just go ahead and replace my carb boots while I'm at it. I've got some noticeable cracks in the rubber. But I'm not sure if it's catastrophic. From what I can tell these are the original boots from 1980 as I spotted the ARS stamping.

I believe 650central still has the TourMax iteration if they need to be replaced. Sumo Rubber looks to be closed down. Any other favorites for OEM carb boots? All thoughts appreciated.

Thanks!

I would definitely replace the boots, especially if they are 1980 survivors.
the rubber will have deteriorated, and hairline aging cracks would be present.
Any appropriate new rubber boots would be better than what you have.

I replaced the boots on my 83 about 5 years ago. It fixed a lot of back fire popping issues at the time. Consider replacing the plugs covering the ports as well. At the time, I lucked out and bought a pair of boots at the local Yamaha dealer. They just happened to have a set in stock. They had been ordered in by another customer but never picked up. His loss, my gain. Never hurts to ask the local dealer.

Try to find ARS boots as replacements. You might get lucky and find some cheap on eBay. But watch out, there are lots of cheap Chinese ones out there now. There haven't been any reports on their quality that I've seen but I doubt they're very good, lol.
