Many of the casting flaws we've seen on here are thin ribbons that stick *above* the surface, and look like yours. See if it's actually a crack that goes below the surface, or just a raised ribbon.
If it IS a crack, the direction (vertical in your pic) is the safer direction. There's a steel shell insert in the case to support every crank bearing, which distributes the loads across the web. Just avoid revving over 7,500 rpm.
Edit: Keep this pic on file. Take more each time the sump plate is pulled, then compare pics to see if the crack progresses...
