Yea the bike does sound hugely different with out or with a full helmet. I usually where a full helmet, covers ears has a visor and was so surprised how different the bike sounded riding when I rode with a skull cap helmet, doesn't cover ears.
 
A bad intake valve seal will suck the oil out of the head going down hill, with the throttle closed there will be strong vacuum in the intakes. I was following jet marty this weekend he has a bad intake valve seal, the RH pipe smoked going down hill. I suppose with a plugged air filter that cylinder could even suck gas.
Bonus points if you know why sucking gas is more likely on pre 78 carbs
