Comparing bits of XS1 and 650 Special, the footrest studs look very similar.
I don't have XS1 type footrests, so I was wondering if later types would fit.
Unfortunately the XS1 has 84mm stud spacing, the Special is at 81mm.
Sooooo.......if I were to cut apart the Special footrests, and extend them by 3mm between the rubber bushes, would the footpegs end up in approximately the correct place ?

Yes if you adjust the spacing they "will fit". the later pegs are shorter and mebby a slight difference in height.
The later also seem to be a bit "heavier" built.

Would suggest your cut/weld be done near the upper rear mounts.

Thanks Gary !
I've got quite a lot of late type footrests, and zero early type.
A major UK bike breaker near me is asking £60 a side for early type.
I'd rather cut and weld and live with them not quite being right.

You can replace one or both of the rubber bushings with bushings that are drilled off-center as an alternative to cutting and welding. However, the 70-73 footrests stick out farther and have a different bend. 74 and later footrests on a 70-73 frame will hit the shifter and/or the side covers. You will have to shim them out from the frame in order to get them to work.

Many Thanks.
Probably worth waiting until I've got an engine in place first.
Then I'll pull the rubbers and go for a trial fit.
I've just been trying a swing arm pivot bolt off a later bike, and I reckon the early frame is about 15mm narrower at the footrest area.
Of course Sod's Law dictates that if I put a load of work into modifying a set of footrests to fit, someone will offer me originals for next to nothing
