They aren't just for looks -- where there's a certain kind of grit around, they'll prevent it from getting in and making oil leak out. The bandanna was literally a life saver and kept my front brake working, to tell the truth. It had already gotten slick.
From a protection point of view, the fork gaiters you have give the best and most, protecting your seals and fork tubes. I run them on all my bikes but I've done a bit better install, shortening them so they look "right" .....
Whoever installed yours did a shit job. The boots are way too long and need to be shortened. I came up with a simple way to shorten them while retaining the nice fitting top and bottom. Start by cutting off the top with the first bellow still attached, like so .....
Now, cut off however many bellows you need to to make them fit and look good. Finally, take the top with the one bellow attached and duck that bellow inside the top bellow on your shortened lower section. No glue or anything needed, just the friction between the two bellows will hold it .....
