having trouble installing pin back into cam chain?

I just slid the link into the end of the chain. Put the side plate on. Used a large pair of Vise Grippes to start the crimp of the pins. Just enough so the plate won't slide off the pins as I finish peening with my 20 ounce ball peen hammer while backing it up with my 3 lb sledge hammer.
If you mean you can't get the chain ends close enough to fit the link then pull the bearings of one side of the cam. This will let the cam drop down. Hook the link as described, lift the cam up, slip the bearings back on.
