the rev counter doesn't work on my '79. I don't know if it ever has as even though it came with the bike it wasn't on it when I got it.
The new cable spins from the engine and I used a electric drill from the engine end but the rev counter doesn't work.

I take it this is the right type for my bike?

Before I take it apart, any pointers as to what to look for?

thanks

Look into where the square end of the drive cable fits into the rev counter drive. It should be visibly square to suit the cable end. It might be worn such that the square cable can't drive it.

I assume you did have the drill rotating in the correct direction when you tried driving the rev counter with it?
