I found this on the web. So if you're going to visit Australia and frequent our Northern waters, print this leaflet out and refer to it if needed. Really good advice, particularly the last one, just make sure the tree is sturdy.
It fails mentioning what to do if the croc goes into a death roll though. If the croc does go into a death roll, just spin your body with him and change your grip on the tree, hand over hand. Alternatively, spread your legs really wide, that will widen the crocs girth, making it impossible for him/her to roll over. I've used this trick many times in my trips North, it works well.

Well, thank you for putting up this very good advice, @toglhot but I'll decline. Not too many crocs where I go for my daily walk, plus I'd be worried my French might fail me in that moment of crisis.
