finally got my project sorted out from po attempt at building the bike . so i was ready to fire it up tonite ,checked all the basics ... couldn't find the ignition point gap specs ,even in the factory shop book . bike is a '78 xs650 . well cleaned the point the way they were , and bike fired right up :D but still want to check the point gap and timing

Congratulations on a new runner. Do a text search on "point" in the pdf of the manual. Handy feature.

If you're re-setting used points, stick to the lower side of the spec. Points pit as they wear and the spark jumps between these pits. You can't measure the distance between the pits with a feeler gauge. Setting used points is best done with a dwell meter.
